Memorial Day observance
The city of Richmond Hill will hold its annual Memorial Day observance at 11 a.m. Monday in J.F. Gregory Park. The featured speaker will be Col. Douglas C. Cardinale, commander of the 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team at Fort Stewart. Other speakers include Richmond Hill Mayor E. Harold Fowler and representatives from the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorial Day program
The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit will host its sixth annual Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday in downtown Pembroke. Pembroke resident Emma Lane will sing for the occasion, and two flags will be raised in honor of two Vietnam veterans, Jack Butler Jr. and Orvin Williams.

Meeting rescheduled
The Richmond Hill Planning and Zoning Commission’s regular meeting set for Monday has been canceled due to the Memorial Day holiday. The commission’s next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, immediately following a public hearing at 6:45 p.m., at City Hall.

Library closed
The Bryan County Public Libraries in Richmond Hill and Pembroke will be closed Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

Church celebration
Bryan Neck Missionary Baptist Church will hold its Deacons and Deaconess 39th anniversary at 3 p.m. June 3 at the church, 16525 Highway 144, Richmond Hill. The theme will be “Deacons and Deaconess: Serving God Boldly in Perilous Times.” The messenger will be Elder Daniel Boyd, pastor of Emmanuel Christian Church in Richmond Hill.The public is invited to lift up the name of Jesus through praise, worship and fellowship.

Health board meeting
The Bryan County Board of Heath will meet at 10 a.m. June 5 in the Bryan County Health Department conference room in Pembroke.

Rockin’ the Ark
Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church will host Rockin’ the Ark vacation Bible school from 6-8:30 p.m. June 3-7. All ages are invited to the free event, and dinner and snacks will be served. Register online at rhpchurch.com or call 756-2339.

Bible school

New Beginnings Community Church will hold a fall-harvest celebration from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at 75 Crosswinds Drive, at the entrance to Buckhead North.
Activities planned include hay rides, hot-dog roasting, face painting, games and prizes. All activities are free and open to the public.

Book signing set for Pembroke Public Library
J.G. Jakes, author of “The River’s Edge,” will have a book signing from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Pembroke Public Library.
When asked to sum up in one sentence what kind of story “The River’s Edge” is, Jakes said, “It’s an altogether human story: love and hatred, regret and forgiveness, faith and consequences and a cross.”
“The River’s Edge” is about an evil man, a horrible murder, a miscarriage of backwoods justice and a young woman’s vow of revenge.
Jakes was born and raised in Shellman. She now is a retired school teacher.  
“It is my genuine desire to share the grace of God and encourage others as they continue on their Christian journey,” Jakes said.

Fall art show, reception planned for Nov. 8
Arts on the Coast will have its fall art show and reception at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, on the grounds surrounding Leahy Art Gallery in Richmond Hill.
