A fundraiser to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society called “Dine Out to Knockout Cancer” will be held Tuesday in Richmond Hill. The event is hosted by Lifesavers, Team Dylan and Team Evan, who are joining forces with several local restaurants to find a cure for cancer.
Residents are asked to dine at La Napolera, Hill House Café, Augies, Uptown Deli and Papa’s Pizza, as a percentage of their sales on that day will be donated to the Luekemia & Lymphoma Society.

Asperger support
The Richmond Hill Asperger support group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the community room of the Richmond Hill Public Library. For more information, email rhaspergergroup@aol.com.

Library meeting
The Bryan County Library Board’s meeting set for Wednesday has been rescheduled. The board will instead meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Richmond Hill Public Library.
The board’s Building Committee will have its next meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Richmond Hill Public Library. All Bryan County Library Board meetings are opening to the public.

Public hearing
The city of Richmond Hill will hold  a public hearing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in City Hall before the City Council meeting.
The public hearing will be about the short term work program that is part of the comprehensive plan.

Organic gardening
A program on organic gardening and farming will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. May 23 at the Wetlands Center in Richmond Hill Dr. George Boyhan of the University of Georgia will be presenting the program and representatives from the Bethesda Home  Organic Farm will be on hand for a presentation and a sample of  some of their products. Memorial Day observance

The city of Richmond Hill will hold its annual Memorial Day observance at 11 a.m. May 27 in J.F. Gregory Park.
The guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Neal Corson, commander of the 2-3 Brigade Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart. Other speakers will include representatives from the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Vietnam Veteran of America.
The event will close with a laying-of-the-wreath ceremony and a 21-gun salute.

Fort McAllister
Join the troops at Fort McAllister State Historic Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 25 in a Civil War salute to our fallen heroes.
The Memorial Day commemoration will consist of multiple cannon and musket firings, blacksmithing and other common work done by Confederate and Union soldiers. Help remember those that have sacrificed so much to ensure rights of liberty, justice and freedom. Cost for adults is $6.50, seniors $6, youth $3.50 and children under 6 are free.

Meeting postponed

The Richmond Hill Planning and Zoning Commission’s regularly scheduled May 27 meeting has been postponed due to Memorial Day.
The meeting has been rescheduled to 7:30 p.m. May 28 in City Hall.

Faith, Fitness and Fun

The Richmond Hill YMCA and New Covenant Presbyterian Church will hold Faith, Fitness and Fun vacation Bible school for children ages 5-11 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at J.F. Gregory Park. Cost is $10 per child. For more information or to register, call 912-756-5856.

New Beginnings Community Church will hold a fall-harvest celebration from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at 75 Crosswinds Drive, at the entrance to Buckhead North.
Activities planned include hay rides, hot-dog roasting, face painting, games and prizes. All activities are free and open to the public.

Book signing set for Pembroke Public Library
J.G. Jakes, author of “The River’s Edge,” will have a book signing from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Pembroke Public Library.
When asked to sum up in one sentence what kind of story “The River’s Edge” is, Jakes said, “It’s an altogether human story: love and hatred, regret and forgiveness, faith and consequences and a cross.”
“The River’s Edge” is about an evil man, a horrible murder, a miscarriage of backwoods justice and a young woman’s vow of revenge.
Jakes was born and raised in Shellman. She now is a retired school teacher.  
“It is my genuine desire to share the grace of God and encourage others as they continue on their Christian journey,” Jakes said.

Fall art show, reception planned for Nov. 8
Arts on the Coast will have its fall art show and reception at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, on the grounds surrounding Leahy Art Gallery in Richmond Hill.
