Richmond Hill

Census jobs

The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for individuals to assist with preparations for the 2010 Census. The Census Bureau will host information/application sessions at the following Bryan County locations in December: Bryan County Library–Richmond Hill, 9607 Ford Avenue, Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m. and again at 3 p.m. Bryan County Library-Pembroke, 1018 Camelia Drive, Saturday, Dec. 13 at noon.

At the sessions, job opportunities will be explained and attendees interested in applying will complete application forms along with a 30-minute general skills test. Applicants should bring two forms of identification to the session.

DDS

All Department of Driver Services (DDS) driver licensing and testing Customer Service Centers will be closed Thursday, Nov. 27 through Friday, Nov. 28 and will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008. The day following a holiday is typically a very busy day, so please plan ahead. Many transactions may be initiated online such as a change of address and replacing a lost license. Donations sought

The City of Richmond Hill will be doing its part to make the holiday season special for residents of the state’s mental health and retardation hospitals through the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade.

Donated items from the City of Richmond Hill will be delivered to Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Civic organizations, businesses, churches, schools, scout troops and individual citizens are encouraged to help with the collection of gifts for the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade. Gifts should be placed in the drop boxes no later than Dec. 9.

Drop-off locations include the Richmond Hill City Hall, the Richmond Hill-Bryan County Chamber of Commerce, and the Bryan County Annex/Jack Kingston Building.

 

Fort McAllister

Fort McAllister State Park will hold a winter muster and battle on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the park, which is located at the end of the Hwy. 144 Spur. The cost is $4 for adults and $2.50 for children. For more information call 727-2339.

 

Trash pickup

Because of the Thanksgiving Day holiday Thursday Nov. 27, all dry trash normally picked up that day in Richmond Hill will be picked up Wednesday, November 26.

The normal pickup schedule will resume the week after Thanksgiving.

 

Wetlands forum

The Center for a Sustainable Coast will hold a forum on "Protecting Coastal Waterways and Wetlands Using Low Impact Design and Conservation ordinances."

The forum will be Friday, Dec. 5 from 9 a.m.-noon at Coastal EMC on Hwy. 17 in Midway. The cost to attend is $10. Seating is limited. Call (912) 638-3612 for more information.

 

Appreciation

The Tattnall Missionary Baptist Association will hold an Appreciation Worship and Fellowship for Rev. Dr. Charlie L. Anderson on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Hinesville.

Anderson recently resigned as Moderator of the Tattnall Missionary Baptist Association, after serving for 36 years.

Hospice

Hospice Savannah, Inc. invites you to honor or remember someone special during the holiday season by attending the 17th annual Tree of Light ceremony and memorial service on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m.

It will be held outdoors on the grounds of Full Circle, a Center for Education and Grief Support,7212 Seawright Drive in Savannah. Tree of Light donations can be sent to Hospice Savannah Foundation Inc., attn Tree of Light, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416

All donations support bereavement counseling services offered to anyone in the community at no charge.

5K walk/run

Do something good for yourself and others. 5K walk/run with quarter-mile fun run for kids. Thanksgiving Day. Thursday, Nov. 27. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the races start at 8:45 a.m. Registration fee is 10 cans of food plus $15 (18+), $10 (ages 10-17), or $5 (ages 10 and under.) Early voting

Early/Advanced voting for the Dec. 2 General Election Runoff will be available at the Voter Registration Office in Pembroke (151 S. College St.) and at the Courthouse Annex in Richmond Hill (9930 Ford Ave.). Dates and times of operation for both locations are as follows: Nov. 24, 25, and 26. Christmas Party

American Legion Post 164, Pembroke, will host active duty military members and their families at their annual Christmas party Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. at the post home.

Active duty military personnel, their spouses and children who reside in the Pembroke, Ellabell or Brooklet area are welcome to come and are asked to please confirm your attendance with the names and ages of children who will be attending. Reading Club

Girl Scout Troop 262 is offering a "Reading Club" for all 1st Graders in Richmond Hill. This "Reading Club" will offer Reading and Sight Word help provided by spunky 6th Graders who are earning their Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is the highest Award to be earned in this age level and these girls have been working on this for 2 years. This project will complete all requirements necessary.

The "Reading Club" will take place on Saturdays at 10 a.m. at the Richmond Hill Library (beginning Dec. 13). If you wish for your child to participate, please sign up at the Library.

 

4-H program

Silent Auction items are needed to benefit the Bryan County 4-H Program at the Christmas in Pembroke festivities.

Area businesses, organizations, and parents are encouraged to contribute gift certificates, gift baskets, memberships, sports and school spirit items, church cookbooks, jewelry, crafts and anything of interest. All proceeds will be used by the Bryan County 4-H Program to offer scholarships, registration fees, and travel to various 4-H activities throughout the year. This is the sole fundraiser for the entire Bryan County 4-H Program. Any and all help is needed and greatly appreciated. For more information call Shanna Davis at 653-2231.

 

RH Presbyterian

On Dec. 7 at 7 p.m., the Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church will again host the Moravian Love Feast for all those persons interested in experiencing this celebration of Christian unity. The traditional Moravian Love Feast celebrates the birth of Christ through scripture reading and prayer, the singing of hymns, the lighting of candles, and the serving of Moravian buns and coffee. Teen board

New members are wanted for the Richmond Hill Library Teen Board, a group of preteen and teen volunteers in grades 6-12. They hold meetings twice monthly to write book reviews, plan special activities and youth programs and much more. Pembroke GC

Animal shelter

The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary has placed collection boxes at City Hall and Harvey’s in Pembroke for donations to the North Bryan animal shelter. Needed items include blankets, sheets and other bedding items, as well as cat food, dog food and treats for the animals.

 

Master Gardener

Are you interested in learning about the how’s, why’s and how come’s of gardening? If so, you may want to take the Master Gardener course. This program is an in-depth study of gardening that will include: Composting, Butterfly Gardening, Water Gardening, Plant Propagation, Pest Control, Irrigation, Xeriscaping and much more. 2009 classes will start on Tuesday, Feb. 3 and run through Thursday, May 5. The class sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-noon at the Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens (No. 2 Canebrake Road) on Hwy. 17.

Cost of the program is $175. Each class participant must agree to donate 50 hours of volunteer service following completion of the course.

Heating help

The Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority, Inc., will assist eligible households with heating bills. Georgia’s Heating Assistance program is for homebound, disabled and elderly households 65 years or older. Also households with individuals who have life-threatening medical conditions and have been disconnected or are in danger of being disconnected may apply. All other eligible families may apply starting Dec. 1. Call 1-866-423-8081.
