NAACP

A Bryan County N.A.A.C.P. Interest Group meeting will be Monday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 185 Poplar St., Pembroke.

The guest speaker is Elizabeth Larkin with Gateway BHS. She is an HIV/EIS counselor. There will be educational material and free, confidential testing. Everyone is invited.

Fort McAllister

Fort McAllister Historic Park in Richmond Hill will hold a Labor Day weekend program from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. There will be demonstrations of blacksmithing, woodworking and black powder cannon firings. Visitors can take part in Civil War games and enjoy a cool slice of melon. Car club

The "Over the Hill Gang, Inc." car/truck club of Richmond Hill invites existing members and anyone who wishes to join the organization to a cookout at Wayne Jackson’s place on Rabbit Hill Road this Saturday, Aug. 25, from 4-6:30 p.m.

A classic car will be stationed at Port Royal Road next to the new Publix, giving directions. A cruise-in will follow at 7 p.m. at Ford Plaza in front of the 606 Café. The club meets every fourth Saturday at Ford Plaza to display vehicles and enjoy the company of fellow auto enthusiasts. The group supports local charities through fundraisers and other events. American Legion

The American Legion Post 164 and Ladies Auxiliary meet on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The post is located on U.S. Highway 280 West of Pembroke. All veterans are welcome.

Book signing

Sensational Minds, an African American Bookstore in Savannah, will hold a book-signing event on Wednesday, Aug. 29 from 6-8 p.m. Author Cathy Middleton, a family law attorney with a specialty in child support matters will present her book, "Girl, Get That Child Support" to the Savannah and Lowcountry community.

Picnic postponed

Because of the hot weather and the opening of schools in the area, the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 164, Pembroke, has decided to cancel the picnic for wives and children of deployed soldiers that was to be held on Saturday, Aug. 25.

A later date will be announced.

Public hearings

The Bryan County Board of Commissioners announced Aug. 9 a plan to raise property taxes for the upcoming fiscal year.

The final public hearing is Aug. 27, at 9:30 a.m. at the Bryan County Courthouse.

Blood drive

The Annual American Red Cross Blood Drive is being held at Coastal Electric Cooperative located at 1265 S. Coastal Hwy Midway in the John T. Woods, Jr. Auditorium on Aug. 30 from 2-7 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns call Kim at 880-2236.

Tractor pull

A tractor and truck pull will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, beginning at 5 p.m., at Longneedle Farm in Daisy. Gates open at 4 p.m. Bring your tractors and trucks and come pull. There will be lots of fun, good food and great prizes.

Historical society

On Sept. 6 the Richmond Hill Historical Society will present James Jordan, author and local historian. Jordan will be discussing "Classicism in Georgian Architecture: How It Got From Ancient Greece and Rome to Savannah." Jordan conducts private tours in Savannah. His most recent book, "Savannah Grey," a tale of Antebellum Georgia was well received by the public. He is a gifted speaker and is highly recommended by the Georgia Historical Society. The meeting begins at 7 p.m..

Library book sale

Pembroke Library’s annual book sale is just around the corner.

The kids are back in school and it’s time to clean out the closets, etc. Please think about donating all your old, but in good condition, books to the Pembroke Library for their annual book sale.

The book sale will be held on Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. until the library closes. Your continuing support is greatly appreciated.

A grief support meeting for those who have lost a child, grandchild, or sibling is now forming in Pembroke.

American Legion

Richmond Hill American Legion Post 27 now meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Chamber of Commerce across from Blocker's Barber Shop. The executive board meets at 6 p.m. and the regular meeting gets under way at 7 p.m.

Nonprofit help

Each year hundreds of thousands of nonprofit organizations apply to community foundations, private and corporate foundations and the United Way for funding. In 2006, United Way raised over $7.8 million to support more than 90 community-oriented programs and 37 nonprofit health and human service organizations within the Coastal Empire.

Nonprofits seeking success in applying to United Way and to other funding programs need to plan how to track and demonstrate measurable program results.

To help local nonprofits in their efforts, the Georgia Center for Nonprofits (GCN) is offering Developing Outcome-Based Performance Measures For Grant-Funded Programs on Aug. 16 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the United Way Building, 428 Bull St., Savannah. Applications to the United Way of the Coastal Empire are due Aug. 31.

Trainer Sharon DuBose, with the Central Savannah River’s Economic Opportunity Authority, is certified by the Georgia Results Oriented Management Association, and has offered this training to hundreds of nonprofits.

Grants available

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Coastal Georgia Affiliate announces the availability of grant funds for fiscal year 2008.

Applications for breast cancer and breast cancer health programs from non-profit organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, Liberty, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh counties are eligible for funding.

This is the first year the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate is funding local community programs.

The grant cycle runs through Aug. 31. Eligible applications must be postmarked by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. Announcement of funding will be made by Oct. 1.

Donations sought

Between now and Sept. 11, the community can donate school supplies toward St. Joseph’s/Candler’s Angels of Mercy’s annual Danny’s Brown Box and Gail Jones’ Backpack for Every Child school supply drive.

The drive provides art and school supplies to at-risk students in local childcare facilities and classrooms in Savannah. St. Joseph’s/Candler co-workers set up brown boxes in work areas for collections.

All donations are welcome, including composition books, paper, crayons, pencils, pens, rulers, and back packs. Backpacks must be clear or mesh to meet school policies.

Donations can be made to the main entrance lobbies of St. Joseph’s Hospital, 11705 Mercy Blvd. and Candler Hospital, 5353 Reynolds St. or at East Bay Inn, 225 E. Bay St.
