ATLANTA — Richmond Hill Mayor Harold Fowler and city-council members Russ Carpenter, Johnny Murphy and John Fesperman were among the nearly 1,000 city officials who attended the Georgia Municipal Association’s annual Mayors’ Day Conference held Jan. 23-26 in Atlanta.
The annual conference provides city officials with an opportunity to learn more about legislation under consideration at the Georgia Capitol, attend training sessions and listen to updates from state leaders. Attendees heard from Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, and U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga.
During the conference, officials had the choice of attending concurrent sessions on communicating in a crisis, combating the problem of human trafficking and making the case for environmental courts. They also participated in GMA’s six policy committees and heard about transportation-funding issues and improving education.
“Attending Mayors’ Day gives us an opportunity to hear about legislation affecting our cities so we can then discuss these issues with our legislators, and it also gives us a voice in shaping GMA’s legislative policies,” Fowler said.
