Eugene and Sandra Whitten of Bulloch County recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary quietly at home.
Originally from Pendleton and Spartanburg, S.C., respectively, the couple wed Dec. 29, 1960, in Hartwell, Ga., and have since lived all over the world. They have made many friends and are loved by all who know them.
Both retired from civil service in 1998. Eugene is also a retired Army master sergeant and veteran of the Vietnam War.
The Whittens, who lived in Liberty County from 1985 until moving to Bulloch County in April 2009, love camping, reading, their children and great-grandchildren, working in the yard and Georgia Southern football.
They have three children, two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Their youngest daughter Marilee was killed in 1985 in Columbia, S.C. She is missed dearly.
Their daughter Kay Whitten lives in Austin, Texas, along with grandson David Zack. Granddaughter Evia Zack attends school at Carleton College in Minnesota.
Their son Jeff Whitten and daughter-in-law Beverly live in Effingham County, where step-grandchildren Art and Matt Bargeron and step-great-grandchildren Roland and Scarlett Bargeron also reside.
