On Oct. 29, Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers from Liberty, Long, Bryan, McIntosh, Evans and Tattnall counties assembled in Hinesville for training on the Court Process Reporting System, a statewide database. The training, held at The Coastal Bank, was conducted by George Li of the Supreme Court of Georgia Committee on Justice for Children.
The Court Process Reporting System (CPRS 2) allows CASA volunteers to access case file information input by Department of Family and Children Services personnel. The information contains facts about court case history, foster parent placement, case plans and other relatives. CPRS 2 lets CASA volunteers obtain information only about the cases that have been appointed to them  by a juvenile court judge.
CASA volunteers also will be able to draft and input court reports for review by judges at the judges’ convenience.
Juvenile court judges appoint CASA volunteers to advocate for children who may have been abused and/or neglected. CASA ensures children never get lost in the legal and social services systems. Volunteers research case information, meet frequently with the children they represent, communicate with key parties in children’s lives and work with, but independent of, court and DFCS personnel. They also find safe, nurturing and permanent homes for the children they serve.
The Atlantic Area CASA program was started in 1999 in Liberty County. The program now covers Liberty, Long, Bryan, McIntosh, Tattnall and Evans counties. To become a volunteer, a participant must complete 30 hours of training and 10 hours of court observation, pass a background check and complete an interview.
