The Richmond Hill High School, “Odyssey of the Mind,” competition team placed second during the State Competition held this past weekend at Columbus University.
Team members Michelle Todd, Emily Li, Rich Li, Nicole Forlenza, Gemille Walker, Mitchell Gramazio and Jack Jenkins competed against high school teams from the entire state after placing first in the regional completion held in Macon in March.
This second-place finish resulted in an invitation to compete in the world competition to be held in East Lansing Michigan in May. Thirty countries will be participating in the East Lansing competition.
Odyssey of the mind is an international creative problem solving two part competition. First, students are given a complex problem to solve where they make props, skits and an devise an “out of the box” solution for their problem.  This is on a minimal budget to present before a team of judges.  The second part is called “spontaneous,” the team goes into a room and is presented with a physical or verbal problem; they are given one minute and must come up with an original answer or solution.
These exemplary young people, the leaders of tomorrow, are now faced with a new problem; raising enough money to make the trip. With education cutbacks the team is only receiving $400 from Richmond Hill High School leaving the team to raise an additional $6,500 for this once in a lifetime experience. The Odyssey of the Mind Team is asking for tax deductible contributions in any amount and for businesses or individuals contributing $200 or more a Team T-shirts will be made listing your name or logo recognizing the donation. Donations may be sent to:  Bryan Bank & Trust, RHHS Odyssey of the Mind donations at PO Box 1299 Richmond Hill, GA 31324 or Cherie Todd-Becker 65 Parker Lane Richmond Hill, GA 31324.
