Lanier Primary will be hosting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon through Oct. 4-15. Students in grades K-2 will have the opportunity to sharpen their math skills while raising funds to help the children of St. Jude’s.
Participating students will work math problems in a grade-appropriate math fun book or by using an online fun book. The students’ parents then collect donations from sponsors for the problems completed.
“Students have the opportunity to earn great prizes such as free Six Flags over Georgia tickets and t-shirts for participating in the Math-A-Thon,” said Lanier Math-A-Thon coordinator Iris Sims. “This is always an exciting time for our students as they have fun solving math problems.”
The Math-A-Thon is a supplemental math education program aligned to National Math Standards. It also serves as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital of Memphis, Tenn., that maintains 78 inpatient beds and treats about 260 patients each day.
It is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance.
Lanier Principal Dr. Patti Newman likes to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and encourages student participation in the Math-A-Thon.
“We have had several children from our area benefit from treatment at St. Jude’s in past years” noted Newman. “We hope none of our children will ever be a patient at St. Jude’s but we are very thankful that this wonderful facility is there should a need ever arise.”
