Phillip Gray, Philip Martinez, and Drew Renshaw of Richmond Hill have been selected to join Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps for its 40th anniversary season.

Out of hundreds of young and talented musicians who have auditioned to join the corps for the 2016 season, all ages 15-22, these musicians were selected to be performers for the 2016 edition of Spirit of Atlanta. One hundred and fifty members are chosen each years based on talent, athletic skills, and passion for performing. Above all, they must exhibit the attitude needed to complete a challenging and high-quality artistic program.

Spirit of Atlanta is a member of Drum Corps International, which is a governing body facilitating summer educational events, performances, and competitions. The group will be in more than 20 competitions and exhibitions across the country for an audience of 300,000.

Spirit of Atlanta Director Chris Moore said, "The performing members we have selected are at the top of their game. The character they exude, dedication and hard work will be fine-tuned skills they will carry for the rest of their lives."

Event information can be found on the corps’ website: www.spiritdrumcorps.org

The awards were presented May 8 during Honors Night at RHHS.

Wood plans to attend Green Mountain College in Vermont and major in environmental studies.

Vargas plans to attend Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, to pursue a degree in either environmental studies or biology.

The garden club awards a $1,000 scholarship annually to a local high school senior who plans to major in a field related to environmental concerns, plants and/or gardening.

This year, due to having two exceptional candidates, the garden club awarded an additional $500 scholarship.

Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Richmond Hill recently named Caroline Odom as its student of the year.

The club each month during the school year names a student of the month, and the student of the year is chosen from among those winners.

Awards are based on academic performance, community involvement and leadership.

Monthly winners receive $100, with the annual winner getting a $1,000 scholarship.

The Exchange Club has been recognizing students for more than 30 years.

Odom will go on to compete in the Georgia District Exchange Club against students from across the state.
