So many wonderful things are happening in the afterschool activities at Richmond Hill Middle School. We are extremely proud of our Wildcats who have devoted the extra time and effort required to achieve these accomplishments. We would also like to express our appreciation to the faculty members and parents who support our students in these endeavors. Go Wildcats!!

The RHMS football team beat South Effingham in the championship game. The Wildcats overcame a 15 point deficit midway through the second quarter, and went on to defeat the Mustangs by a score of 35-28. This is the first time the Wildcats have won a championship since joining the tough region which includes Burke, Screven, Statesboro, and Effingham County schools!

The RHMS girls’ basketball team won the region championship for the first time since 2000. It was also the first time the team had ever gone undefeated to the championship! The girls finished the season 11-0. The team was led by ten eighth graders: Sarah Goolsby, Lakeshia Durham, Keri Edwards, Aliyah Johnson, Breanna Cota, Kendra Ford, Sydney Millek, Olivia Bascombe, Jenai’ Polite, and Trisha Jennings. Seventh grader Bailey Crawford and sixth grader Brandy Franklin rounded out the roster.

The RHMS boy’s basketball team finished the season 2 – 6. The players demonstrated a lot of sportsmanship both on and off the court. We look forward to a successful season next year.

The RHMS Boys Soccer team just finished out a great season by winning the region championship. We’ve started the season with a 1-1 record. Our first match against Burke County Middle School ended in a 5-0 victory. Our second match against Ebenezer Middle School ended in a shoot-out loss. Our team of 19 has many returning players. We are a supportive unit dedicated to hard work on and off the field. Our character is displayed in our collective emphasis on sportsmanship and a respect of the game. With the support of our school and community we intend to continue in the tradition of successful RHMS soccer.

The 2008 Girls’ Soccer team also just won the region championship. The team is 2-0 and this includes a 6-0 victory over our strong competitor Ebenezer Middle School. The team works very well together. The girls have true competitive spirits and represent Richmond Hill Middle School well with their fine display of good sportsmanship.

The boys' track team is doing well during this first season. We have had a number of students finish in the top three in a variety of events.

The 2008 RHMS girls’ track team is having an amazing season so far. The girl’s took second place in their first two meets of the season, defeating Screven and Portal. Carie Rivera, Kailyn Green, Keisha Durham, and Brandy Franklin have crushed the competition in the 4 x 400 meter relay by consistently putting up impressive times. Dana Rhode, Hanna Panch, and Marian Lemmons dominate in the mile run, while Kassi Derf and Lauren Neal have left runners in their dust in the 800 meter run. Not only can the girls run, they also handle the field events with ease. Kailyn Green, Destiny Lawson, and Austin King always put up big numbers in the high jump, discus, and shot put. This year’s girls’ track team gives all they have to every practice and to every meet; they never complain; and they never let up. The girls are setting their minds to achieving their goals and coming out on top at the Region Meet.

The tennis team had a very successful first season. The program is coached by RHHS tennis coach Pat Paruso and ended with a 5-3 record and third in the region for their inaugural season.

The RHMS Girls’ Golf Team began practice in February. Waterford Golf Club has graciously allowed us to come there each week for practice driving, putting, chipping, and playing rounds of golf. Coach Randall Boone has helped us facilitate this by driving us to Waterford each week.

The five young ladies on the team are: JoAnna Bayens, Taylor Glover, Ashley Russell, Miranda Bickes, and Samantha Smith.

Members have been working with a variety of media. Students just recently worked with fabric design. Art students are meeting standards in class, and they are doing a little extra work by participating in many poster contests. Jordan Real’s (8th grade student) art was sent to state competition. She was RHMS’s winner of the Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute’s Buckle Up for Safety poster contest. Clay Lucas (8th grade) and Chris Ralston (6th grade) entered their artwork in the USS Georgia Student Art competition. Their art was done in celebration of the USS Georgia submarine’s return to service. Students are preparing for another competition about alcohol, tobacco, and drugs abuse. The contest is sponsored by the Bryan County Drug Free Coalition.
