The second grade at Richmond Hill Elementary School was visited on Oct. 23 by the Richmond Hill Fire Department as part of Fire Safety Week. An assembly was held in which fire safety rules were discussed and students were able to view a fire truck. Some also got to see firefighters up close. Among them were Kenecia Chukwudi, Sydney Fortson and Jalen Rouse from Mrs. Grant-Barr’s class, shown with Firefighter Dave Williams in full bunker gear. Richmond Hill Fire Department personnel teach fire safety classes to over 1,000 pre K, Kindergarten and 2nd grade classes each year, according to RHFD Firefighter Joe Forlenza. "Children hide in closets and under beds in fear of the scary monster walking into their room, so we present a friendly firefighter," Forelenza said. "In this case Dave put on all of his gear piece by piece, to show the children that the person behind the mask is just a fireman or firewoman and to not be afraid."
