BCMS students headed to D.C.

Two Bryan County Middle Schoolers will be representatives for Bryan County Schools in Washington, D.C. during the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, July 26-31.

Incoming Bryan County Middle School 6th graders Barbara O’Connor and Grant Christian will attend the program, along with more than 250 outstanding middle school students from across the United States.

Christian was selected because of his leadership capabilities and his determination to help others at school. The past two years, he has received the Principals Award, is a member of Hendrix Park Football and an assistant soccer coach, member of Bryan County 4-H Club and attends the Beulah Baptist Church in Pembroke. He is the son of Glenn Christian of Pembroke.

O'Connor was nominated by her 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Hollis Hiil. She is the daughter of SSG (P) and Mrs. Shane and Annie O’Connor of Pembroke.

She would like to acknowledge her grandparents, William and Barbara Gilliam of Glendale, Ariz., for their assistance in making her attendance to this conference possible.

The conference is themed 'Voices of Leadership: Reflecting on the Past to create the Future,' and aims at introducing young people to the rich tradition of leadership throughout American history, while helping them develop their own leadership skills.

Participants at the conference will explore historic sites in the Washington D.C. area and have an opportunity to meet with elected congressional officials and key aides.

In the end, scholars are expected to take the lessons they have learned and bring a greater understanding of true leadership back to their local communities.
