Bryan County kids set the bar on CRCT

Bryan County’s School kids tested well in the most recent Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, or CRCTs, according to results from the Georgia Department of Education.
The system recently learned it finished among the highest in the area on the 2010 CRCTs.
Overall, Bryan County’s scores were generally higher than in surrounding counties, such as Bulloch, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty, according to information from the Georgia Department of Education.
For example, first-graders in Bryan had a score of 851.02 in reading.
In Bulloch that score was 839.8, in Chatham it was 834.91, in Effingham first-graders scored 841.06 and Liberty’s reading score was 836.72.
The state score was 840.
Among the findings for Bryan first-graders.
- In reading, 96.7 percent met or exceeded the standard.
- In English/language arts,  93.6 percent of 1st graders met or exceeded standards.
- In math, 92.3 percent of first-graders tested in Bryan County met or exceeded standards.
- Bryan County second-graders also performed well as a group.
- 97.2 percent met or exceeded standards in reading.
- 93.3 percent met or exceeded standards in English/language arts.
- 92.6 percent met or exceeded standards in math.
Third-graders in Bryan County scored highly, as well.
- In reading, 93.8 percent met or exceeded standards.
- In English/language arts, 93.2 percent met or exceeded standards.
- In math, 88.6 percent met or exceeded standards.
- In science, 93.6 percent met or exceeded state standards.
- In social studies, 94.1 met or exceeded standards.
Among the findings for Bryan fourth-graders:
- 95.3 percent met or exceeded standards in reading.
- 92.9 percent met or exceeded standards in English/language arts.
- 86.1 percent met or exceeded standards in math.

- 90.4 percent met or exceeded standards in science.
- 87.5 percent met or exceeded standards in social studies.
Fifth-graders did well, too. Among the results:
- 91.7 met or exceeded standards in reading.
- 95.3 met or exceeded standards in English/language arts.
- 83.9 percent met or exceeded standards in math.
- 87.5 percent met or exceeded standards in science.
- 84.3 percent met or exceeded standards in social studies.
 Middle-schoolers also take the CRCT. Among the 2010 results for Bryan sixth-graders:
-  94.3 percent met or exceeded standards in reading.
- 93.5 percent met or exceeded standards in English/language arts.
- 79.2 percent met or exceeded standards in math.
- 80.8 percent met or exceeded standards in science.
- 75.8 percent met or exceeded standards in social studies.
Bryan County seventh-graders fared as follows:
- 92.8 percent met or exceeded standards in reading.
- 94.9 percent met or exceeded standards in English/language arts.
- 90.5 percent met or exceeded standards in math.
- 89.7 percent met or exceeded standards in science.
- 87.5 percent met or exceeded standards in social studies.
The scores for local eighth-graders revealed:
- 97.9 percent met or exceeded standards in reading.
- 96.4 percent met or exceeded standards in English/language arts.
- 88 percent met or exceeded standards in math.
- 85.5 percent met or exceeded standards in science.
- 84.7 percent met or exceeded standards in social studies.
Results for individual schools will be released in July.

Groups hand out scholarships

Three reports recently presented scholarships

Richmond Hill High School senior Jacey Shanholtzer received the Dawn Harrington Berry Spotlight Award, which was awarded by the Richmond Hill Community Theatre and includes a $500 scholarship. The award was created in memory of Dawn Harrington Berry, a long time RHCT member and president who died in 2016.

Garden Club

The Richmond Hill Garden Club recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Katherine Wood and a $500 scholarship to Carly Vargas, both seniors graduating from Richmond Hill High School.

The awards were presented May 8 during Honors Night at RHHS.

Wood plans to attend Green Mountain College in Vermont and major in environmental studies.

Vargas plans to attend Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, to pursue a degree in either environmental studies or biology.

The garden club awards a $1,000 scholarship annually to a local high school senior who plans to major in a field related to environmental concerns, plants and/or gardening.

This year, due to having two exceptional candidates, the garden club awarded an additional $500 scholarship.

Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Richmond Hill recently named Caroline Odom as its student of the year.

The club each month during the school year names a student of the month, and the student of the year is chosen from among those winners.

Awards are based on academic performance, community involvement and leadership.

Monthly winners receive $100, with the annual winner getting a $1,000 scholarship.

The Exchange Club has been recognizing students for more than 30 years.

Odom will go on to compete in the Georgia District Exchange Club against students from across the state.
