The Bryan County Board of Education approved its final budget for fiscal year 2012 at Thursday’s regularly scheduled meeting at the Board of Education Office in Pembroke.

Director of Finance Melanie James gave board members several pieces of updated information about the fiscal year 2012 budget.

She said  originally the Bryan County tax assessor estimated a 12 percent decline in the digest in property taxes. However, she’d recently received information from the tax assessor saying there was a new estimation in digest decline.

“Earlier this week the tax assessor sent us an email that she he thought that now it would be between 5-8 percent (decline),” James told the board. “So if that drops to an 8 percent decrease instead of 12 (percent), we’re looking at an additional $767,000, but we still don’t have a final digest.”

James also informed board members that the workers compensation renewal quotes came in at $293,000. At that time, the insurance agent solicited other quotes to get a new low rate of $243,000. James said the BoE would save approximately $78,000 by switching insurance companies.
