Howard Amelsberg, a senior, has been named 2008 PAGE STAR Student for Bryan County High School.

The Pembroke Lions Club is the local sponsor for the STAR program.

Amelsberg is the son of Howard and Helen Amelsberg of  Ellabell. He selected his chemistry teacher, Michael Owens as his STAR teacher.

"We are very proud of Howard and Mr. Owens and the academic excellence they exemplify at Bryan County High School," Principal Harold Roach said.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 50th year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the STAR program has honored more than 21,000 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement.  Students are selected on the basis of their SAT scores and class standing/scholastic averages.

STAR begins each year in participating high schools throughout Georgia when the STAR student is named and chooses a STAR teacher to share in this recognition.  The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from more than 200 statewide civic organizations and businesses that sponsor local programs.  Students then compete for school system titles, and those winners compete for region honors.

The PAGE Foundation also sponsors academic competitions for students including PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon (GAD) and PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades.  Through its sponsorship of Future Educators Association of Georgia (FFE of GA), Student Professional Association of Georgia (SPAGE), and PAGE Foundation Scholarships, the PAGE Foundation works to recruit capable people to the teaching profession and provide career-long professional learning opportunities for educators.

PAGE is an independent nonunion statewide professional association of more than 69,000 teachers, administrators, and support personnel members with purpose of promoting better education for the children of Georgia.
