ATLANTA — It’s getting tougher to get into Georgia’s top public colleges.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that this year’s freshmen at the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech and Georgia College & State University broke records for SAT scores and GPAs. But the colleges aren’t admitting scores of new students, though, making admission to the campuses increasingly competitive.
That means other colleges, like Georgia Southern University and Kennesaw State University, are seeing larger numbers of applicants than in the past.
Before the HOPE scholarship began in 1993, less than 25 percent of high school graduates with a 1,400 or higher on the SAT stayed in state for school. Now about 75 percent do.
Undergraduate enrollment in Georgia has skyrocketed in the last decade, growing by 77 percent from 1999 to 2009. That outpaces the nation’s growth of 38 percent.
