Sarah Coursey on Wednesday became the first girls’ soccer player from Bryan County High School to sign a letter of intent to play collegiately.

“I’m speechless,” she said of signing with Middle Georgia State University. “This has been my goal since middle school.”

The Knights, an NAIA program that participates in the Southern States Athletic Conference, finished 2017 at 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Coursey said she liked the school and the family atmosphere of the women’s soccer team.

“This just makes me want to work harder and finish strong this season,” she said.

Coursey scored 19 goals as a sophomore and 15 as a junior. She already has nine goals in three games this year.

“She is a leader on and off the field,” Redskins Coach Cindy Jersey said. “She is a bundle of spark and spunk.”

Vinny Gill, head coach for the Knights, said Coursey is an excellent athlete who can play multiple positions.

“She also has great technical ability and is left-footed, which is a plus for a soccer player,” he said.

Jersey said Coursey’s signing is an inspiration to younger players in the program.

“We’re proud of her,” she said. “She has a great attitude and will push her teammates but she’s not intimidating.”
