BCHS boys’ soccer headed to state tourney

POSTED: April 13, 2017 9:36 a.m.

The Bryan County boys’ soccer team has qualified for the state tournament and will host the No. 3 seeded team from Region 4AA on April 26.

The Redskins dropped a 4-1 decision Wednesday night at Toombs County, but finished as the No. 2 seed in Region 2AA. They finished the regular season at 6-6 overall, 6-4 in the region.

“They fought hard and left it all on the field,” first-year Coach Roman Czerwinski said. “They represented North Bryan County well.”

Christian Thomas scored Bryan County’s goal on an assist from Devon Hardy. Other team members are: Brian Morgan, Rafe Hearn, Edward Smith, Viraj Patel, Chance Oliver, Stephen Giddings, Jack Perry, Nathan Woods, Darrin Gusman, Nathan Littleton, Kimonti Murray, Aaron Harvey, Colby Downs and Sage Lamb.

The soccer program at Bryan County is only in its fifth year, and the boys’ team saw its 2016 season end early due to injuries and a lack of players.

Czerwinski said Hardy, Woods, Oliver and Thomas — all seniors — have experience playing club soccer and provide good leadership for the team. Other players, he said, are still learning the game.

“We are very proud of our players,” he added. “They have been competitive all season, earning praise from several coaches.”

The Bryan County girls’ team lost its sub-region playoff game Tuesday night at Toombs County. They qualified for the state tournament for the first time last season.

“I was very proud of the girls in that they played their best and never gave up,” Coach Randy Hale said. “We were handicapped in that Alyssa Edwards, one of our top players, was not 100 percent as she was injured in our last game.”
