WARNER ROBINS — Survivors of a presidentially declared major disaster like Hurricane Irma can receive free legal help if they are unable to pay.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, through an agreement with the Georgia Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association, Georgia Legal Services Program and Atlanta Legal Aid, provides free legal help.

Feelings of loss after a disaster can be compounded by frustration dealing with insurance claims, home repair contracts, or drawing up legal documents to replace ones lost. Disaster legal assistance provided by local lawyers typically covers:

• Help with insurance claims for doctor and hospital bills

• Assistance with insurance claims for loss of life or property;

• Drawing up new wills and other legal papers lost in the disaster;

• Help with home repair contracts and contractors;

• Advice on problems with landlords; and

• Preparing powers of attorney.

Request assistance by calling 866-584-8027 or 404-526-8793, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If prompted to leave a voicemail, leave your name, a good daytime contact number, and brief details of the disaster-related legal assistance needed. A legal representative will return your call as soon as possible.

Legal help in any area of law is only available if the legal issue is directly related to a declared major disaster. Disaster legal advice is limited to cases that will not require a fee. This service will continue to be available until further notice.
