Pembroke Downtown Development Authority Director Alex Floyd was named as finalist for city administrator at Monday night’s council meeting.

Council approved moving forward with contract negotiations with Floyd, but contract approval will require another vote from Council.

Floyd, a Bryan County native, is a Pinewood Christian and Georgia Southern graduate. He formerly taught English at Bryan County High School and worked as a program associate with Bryan County 4-H.

Floyd’s wife, Kristin, is a second-grade teacher at Lanier Primary.

Pembroke has not had a city administrator since December 2015, when Dustin Peebles left the post. He was there from April until December. Peebles is currently Washington County administrator.

As it was the first meeting of the new year, council made their annual elections and appointments. Councilman Johnnie Miller was re-elected Mayor Pro-tem, and Police Chief Randy Alexander and City Clerk Sharroll Faunslau were appointed to continue in their respective roles.

In other business, 1088 W. Bacon Street was approved for spot rezoning to accommodate a new business coming to Pembroke, a linen-cleaning facility. The rezoning was approved by Council despite concerns by the Planning and Zoning Committee which did not recommend the action. Council approved, 3-1. Councilwoman Tiffany Walraven was the one dissent. Councilwoman Diane Moore was not present.

In other business, Council approved a $1 per month increase in the base fee charged for water usage.
