The National Hurricane Center upgraded a depression in the Atlantic to tropical storm status this morning.
It has been named Colin. At 5 this morning the National Weather Service said the third tropical storm of the season was 945 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, heading west-northwest at 23 mph. Sustained winds are near 40 mph with stronger gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend out 35 miles from the eye.
If it continues on its present course it could threaten the eastern seaboard early next week. And the center forecasts strengthening over the next day or two.
At 5 this morning the storm was located at latitude 14.0 north and longitude 47.2 west. It's pressure sat at 1,006 millibars, 29.71 inches.
