POSTED: May 12, 2010 11:30 a.m.
Fort McAllister State Historic Site will have a Memorial Day program from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at the park.
The program will focus on the life of the common Confederate and Union soldiers. There will be musket and cannon demonstrations and special salutes fired in honor of war dead.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3.50 for children.
Situated on the bank of the Great Ogeechee River east of Richmond Hill, near the end of Georgia Spur 144, the park is the home of the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy. The sand and mud earthworks were attacked seven times by Union ironclads, but did not fall until captured in 1864 by Gen. William T. Sherman during his “March to the Sea.”
