Wildcats pick up key region wins; Redskins fall

POSTED: January 24, 2018 1:18 p.m.

The Richmond Hill boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both got crucial region wins against Glynn Academy at home Tuesday night.

For the boys’ team, four Wildcats scored in double figures in a 62-56 victory, led by Sam James’ 17 points. D.J. Lewis added 16, while Sheldon Lewis and Brandon Beckwith added 12 and 10, respectively.

Richmond Hill is now 3-2 in Region 2-AAAAAA with three region games left. The Wildcats are 12-8 overall.

“That was a very important game as we start the second half of our region schedule,” Coach Bill Henderson said. “All the teams in the region are very tough, and picking up a key win will hopefully do a lot for the guys’ confidence as we continue with the second half of region play.”

The girls’ team got 20 points from Jaxson Douglas and 15 from Javionna McDonald in downing the Red Terrors 62-42. That puts the Wildcats at 2-3 in the region and 13-7 overall.

“We had balanced scoring inside and out and played really hard on the defensive end, so it was a great team win for us,” Coach Sarah Jones said. “We look to take this win and continue to work hard each day to get better as we finish region play next week and then head into the post season.”

Both teams host Effingham County Friday for senior night, then play at Brunswick and at Bradwell next week. The top four teams in the five-team region will advance to the state tournament, with the region tournament scheduled for Feb. 7 and Feb. 9. The play-in game for the fourth and fifth teams in the region is Feb. 5.

Both Bryan County teams fell at home Tuesday night to Swainsboro. The boys lost 78-40, dropping them to 2-9 in Region 2-AA and 6-14 overall. They are at Vidalia Friday night.

The girls lost 63-35 and now stand at 7-4 in the region and 16-4 overall.

“We played well in the first half and executed well at both ends of the floor,” Coach Mario Mincey said. “In the second half we made too many mistakes that led to easy baskets for them. Swainsboro is one of the top five teams in the state, so you have to play a complete game to beat them.”

Both teams play at Vidalia Friday and at Long County Saturday.
