The Bryan County girls’ basketball team has won three games in a row and now stands at 9-3 overall and 3-2 in Region 2-AA.

The Redskins recorded a 51-21 win over Vidalia on Friday and a 53-32 victory at Claxton Saturday. Sophomore Olonna Rawls led the Redskins in scoring both games, including a career-high 28 points against Claxton. She had 15 against Vidalia while Jay Black added 11 points and 12 rebounds and Kelsey Leggett had 10 points.

They added a 49-31 against Long County Tuesday night behind 22 points from Rawls.

“We got off to a slow start against Long County in the first quarter and found ourselves down 13-4,” Coach Mario Mincey said. “We made some adjustments in the second quarter and kept them from getting easy baskets. We are battling injuries, but I am so proud of how this team has continued to play.”

After going 2-1 at the Savannah Holiday Tournament, the Richmond Hill girls’ team is now 8-3.

The Wildcats beat Windsor Forest 42-17 Friday and Islands 65-47 Monday while dropping a 54-39 decision to Calvary Day Saturday. Jaxson Douglas led Richmond Hill with 23 points against Islands and 12 points against Calvary Day. Hannah Yontz had 13 points against Windsor Forest. Javionna McDonald added 13 points and Danika Boyd 11 against Islands.

Coach Sara Jones said her team had 26 turnovers against Calvary, which they scored 20 points off of.

“Against Islands we got off to a quick start and got in some foul trouble and it was a back and forth match until about midway through the third quarter and we started to pull away,” she said. “As we head towards region play, we look to clean up our turnovers and being able to get off to a quicker start each game.”

The Wildcats host Camden County on Dec. 28 and Savannah High on Dec. 29 in the Richmond Hill Holiday Classic. Both games are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

The Richmond Hill boys’ team, 4-4, will play today through Saturday at the Battle on the Island Christmas Tournament at Fleming Island near Jacksonville. The Wildcats host Beach Dec. 28 and Savannah High Dec. 29 in the Richmond Hill Holiday Classic. Both games are scheduled to start around 8 p.m.

The Bryan County boys’ team lost two close games over the weekend, 65-60 to Vidalia and 61-59 at Claxton Saturday in overtime, as well as a 66-56 loss to Long County Tuesday.

The Redskins trailed Vidalia 39-22 at halftime before mounting a comeback.

“I loved our fight,” Coach Brent Anderson said. “We went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the region and had a chance at the end.”

Against Claxton, a shot at the buzzer to end overtime was the difference.

“This was a great game to be part of if you were a fan,” Anderson said. “Both teams played really good defense and had to make tough shots throughout the game.”

Jaylin James led the Redskins with 20 points while Gage Hagan added 16. The team drops to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the region.

The Bryan County girls’ team will play Dec. 29-30 in a holiday tournament at Savannah Christian, while the boys will do the same Dec. 27-29 at Vidalia.
