Christmas celebrations are in full swing as Pembroke prepares for its 34th annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony Saturday.

Traditionally held in the morning, this year the parade will be lighted and will take place after dark at 5:30 p.m.

This is also the first year the tree lighting and parade will take place on the same day. This combination of events means that there will be plenty of music and dance presentations for spectators to enjoy.

Also new this year, the market will be on both sides of Railroad Street, leaving the downtown parking area available for parking. Those wishing to get a good spot for parade watching are encouraged to show up early.

Almost twice as many vendors have registered than in previous years, offering food, handmade items and other merchandise. Pembroke’s downtown merchants and restaurants will stay open, so shoppers and diners will have lots of choices on where to spend their money.

The parade has more than 70 float entries and will have two grand marshals this year, sisters Jeanne McCormick and Mary Anna Hite of Pembroke Advanced Communications. They will also have the honor of lighting the town Christmas tree.

McCormick and Hite were chosen due to their commitment to the city and their ongoing support for the community. DDA Director Alex Floyd said the parade marshals are chosen by the DDA board, himself and the mayor.

"I don’t think we’ve ever had an event, or any cause, or anything downtown that the two of them didn’t support. And that the phone company didn’t support," Floyd said. "They do all of our traffic directing at the food drops. They made a very generous donation when we reopened the gym. They just do all kinds of stuff for us and they’re very community spirited."

Parade day will get started with the Christmas Market, vendors will be open at 2 p.m. on Railroad Street. Performances on the stage will begin at 3 in the green space behind the Pembroke Police Department. The parade starts right after the tree lighting. Events will wrap up by 8.
