Redskin hoops open with wins

POSTED: November 27, 2017 12:49 p.m.

The Bryan County girls’ and boys’ basketball teams both beat Portal at home last week to open the 2017-2018 season.

The girls won 60-28, led by 19 points from Shelby Gunn and 15 points from Olanna Rawls. Both also had five rebounds.

“This is a young team with only one senior,” Coach Mario Mincey said. “We have to replace a lot of experience from last year. We were able to get off to a good start because of our defense.”

Mincey’s team last year finished at 24-5 and reached the Elite Eight.

The boys won 65-59 after falling behind 21-13 in the first quarter. Jaylin James led the Redskins with 19 points while Antonio Johnson chipped in 13.

“I’m very pleased with our effort and the resilience we showed in a tight game,” first-year Coach Brent Anderson said. “We have some things to fix, but we are very pleased with a win.”

Bryan County hosts Claxton Tuesday with the girls’ game starting at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.

Richmond Hill

The Richmond Hill boys’ basketball team notched its first win of the year last week with a 41-39 win at Tattnall County. Sam James led the Wildcats with 12 points. They are now 1-3 on the year.

The Richmond Hill girls’ team, 3-1, suffered its first loss at Tattnall, 60-41.

Both teams are at South Effingham Friday night.
