The Richmond Hill High School Young Republicans recently displayed their gratitude by writing thank you letters to our men and women in uniform who are deployed overseas.

During the holiday season, many soldiers are away from their families and will not be home. As a special thank you, the Young Republicans took a moment at one of their recent meetings to express their appreciation for our armed services.

The “100,000 Thank Yous” campaign began in October with the Ty, Kelly and Chuck radio show in Nashville, Tenn. Kate Tinney, a junior and YR club member, told Russ Carpenter, club advisor, of this opportunity.

“I felt lately like soldiers don’t get enough appreciation for their bravery and the sacrifices they make every day,” Tinney said. “After hearing on the radio they wanted 100,000 thank you cards for soldiers, I thought it would be a great activity for our school to get involved. My hope is that more students will participate in giving soldiers a piece of home for the holidays.”

Students wrote messages of thankfulness, but they also expressed other ideas as well. One student wrote, “Thank you so much for your service to this country. It takes a special kind of selflessness to be able to get up and do what you do every day.”

Caroline Odom, a senior and YR secretary, said: “It’s hard for me to imagine what it would be like to be away from family and home in a foreign country for so long, especially at this time of year with the holiday season approaching, so I think it’s good for us to remind them that, although they can’t be home, the people at home are still thinking about them.”

The deadline for campaign has been extended until Dec. 5. Letters can be sent to the Ty, Kelly and Chuck Show at P.O. Box 23797 Nashville, TN 37202. If sending letters in bulk, envelopes are not necessary.
