The late George Mikell “Mike” Foxworth loved sports and the kids who played them.

Sunday, Pembroke made sure nobody will forget Foxworth’s dedication to local youth sports by dedicating the Mikell Foxworth Recreation Center.

Some 50 people attended the ceremony, which included friends, family and local officials.

The center, located in the former Bryan County Elementary School, is open three days a week after school for up to 30 kids, ages 10 to 15.

It was officially named in honor of Foxworth following an effort by the Pembroke Downtown Development Authority, downtown businesses and family members, who together raised more than $3,500.

Sunday’s ceremony was officiated by Pembroke Mayor Judy Cook and Councilmembers Karen Lynn and Johnnie Miller. Foxworth’s grandson, Harrison Veal, unveiled the sign.

Foxworth, who died in January 2016, worked as a Pembroke code enforcement officer, for GDOT and, most recently, in the Black Creek Golf Course pro shop.

He was also a great storyteller as well as a walking history book when it came to Bryan County High School and North Bryan recreation sports.

He is missed by many.
