Shannon Bryant of Richmond Hill High School was named the 2010 PAGE STAR student for the Bryan County School district. The announcement was made last week by Michael Bush of the Richmond Hill Lions Club, who have been long-time sponsors of the local STAR student program.

Bryant, daughter of Michele and Robert Bryant, selected her AP honors chemistry teacher Mr. Joseph Traywick as her STAR teacher.

Bryant said, at first, she was reluctant to take Traywick’s class. She said that Mr. Traywick was reassuring and convinced her that all would be well. She went on to describe him as a "very excellent teacher." Her future plans for schooling are not yet set although she has been accepted into the honors program at The University of Georgia.

Bryant said she would like to major in English and linguistics with the possibility of becoming a secondary English teacher. Among her extra-curricular activities are teaching Sunday School to third-graders at St. Anne’s Catholic Church and being involved in the following clubs: Environmental Club, National Honor Society, Beta Club and Student Council.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, in its 52nd year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the STAR program has honored more than 21,500 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement. To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class.
