Wreck on Highway 80 in Effingham kills Pembroke man

POSTED: July 25, 2017 8:39 p.m.

A Pembroke man was killed and his wife airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah after their Jeep was hit by tractor trailer around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 80 in Effingham County.

Nathan Wolfe, 47, died at the scene, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Dustin Stone. Stone said Wolfe’s wife, Carlene, 53, was taken to Memorial.

Stone said the Wolfes were driving west on Highway 80 and stopped behind a Jeep driven by a 16-year-old, who was also injured.

That driver was waiting to turn left onto Arlington Road near Highway 17 in Eden when the tractor trailer ran into the back of the Wolfes’ vehicle, overturning it and pushing off Highway 80.

Stone said the truck driver, Curtis Clifton of Statesboro, didn’t stop. He was not injured.

Charges against Clifton are pending, Stone said, and the accident is being investigated by the GSP’s Specialized Collision and Reconstruction Team. That investigation could take months.

The wreck closed Highway 80 for more than three hours.
