Mackenzie White, who graduated from Richmond Hill High School last month, signed a national letter of intent Thursday to continue her softball career at Agnes Scott College.

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to keep playing,” she said after her signing at the high school. “I wasn’t sure it was going to happen.”

Agnes Scott College is a private, liberal arts school for women located in Decatur and is ranked in the top 100 schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Its athletic teams complete in the NCAA Division III as part of the USA South Athletic Conference.

“I was drawn to the school even without softball,” White said. “I like its values and the small, private school setting.”

Wildcats Coach Angie Hummeldorf said White was a big part of the team’s offense this past season, which saw Richmond Hill win its second consecutive region title and reach the Sweet 16 for the second year in a row.

“She stepped up at the plate when we needed her,” Hummeldorf said. “She’s a solid team player.”

White appeared in every game as the designated player her senior season and hit .246 with 16 RBIs. Her three home runs were tied for the team lead. She said she expects to play first base for the Scotties.

Several of White’s Wildcat teammates were on hand for the signing, as well as about a dozen younger girls who were attending the Richmond Hill softball camp.

Hummeldorf told the campers that White set a good example and that if they want to play college softball, their dream could also come true.

“This is a special day for any student-athlete,” she said. “Mackenzie works hard on and off the field. Remember, a student-athlete is a student first.”

White said she plans to major in business administration.
