The United States fired 59 cruise missiles into Syria on Thursday night in response to the Syrian government’s chemical attack on its own country, according to the Associated Press.

The strikes hit the government’s Shayrat air base in central Syria, where U.S. officials believe the planes that carried out the Syrian chemical attack left from, the AP reported.

Trump previously disapproved of intervening in Syria while he was on the campaign trail, AP reported.

But the president told reporters from his Mar-a-Lago estate that the attack was a "disgrace to humanity” and “no child of God should ever suffer such horror” seen in the attacks, according to The New York Times.

“We ask for God’s wisdom as we face the challenge of our very troubled world. We pray for the lives of the wounded and for the souls of those who have passed,” Trump said. “And we hope that as long as America stands for justice, that peace and harmony will in the end prevail.”

Videos and images from Syria emerged on social media late Thursday night into Friday morning.

The U.S. military released video footage of the missiles launched by Navy warships from the Mediterranean sea, according to ABC News.

Views of the aftermath of the strike also popped up on Twitter.
