Members of the Rotary Club of Richmond Hill enjoyed a presentation by the Rev. Billy Hester on March 16 during the club’s regular meeting at the City Center.

Hester is a senior minister of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church in Savannah and recently published his first book, “WOW! Moments: Stories of Grace, Wonder, and Synchronicity.” The book is based on Hester’s own experiences and recounts incidences from his own life, which he said built his appreciation for the mysterious workings of the universe and God.

Hester said that in a world filled with personal apprehension, anxiety and event tragedy, his book celebrates moments of grace, wonder and synchronicity. He shared some of these “wow moments” with Rotary Club members and urged guests to start their own journals to capture these times in their own lives.

Hester received a BFA in theater from Valdosta State College and enjoyed a theatrical career in New York before attending seminary at Princeton Theological Seminary and earning a Masters of Divinity. Hester and his wife Cheri returned to the Savannah community in 1991, and Hester was appointed in 1993 as minister of Asbury Memorial UMC, where he worked to rebuild the church and launch the Asbury Theatre.

The Asbury Memorial Theatre is a thriving community theater that has delighted audiences since 1994 with plays, musicals, revues and light opera productions, which have earned several “Best of Savannah” awards. Each October the church presents their God on Broadway series – an innovative worship series led by Hester that combines Broadway musical themes featuring songs from musicals in celebration of God’s word.

“It was an honor to speak to the members of this Rotary Club about ‘Wow! Moments,’” said Hester. “Everyone was so warm and welcoming and it’s always encouraging to have support from the community.”
