School board seeking input on school calendars

POSTED: February 2, 2017 10:07 a.m.

A survey at is asking parents, faculty and others to weigh in on Bryan County Schools proposed calendars for next year - and the year after that, too.

The Bryan County school board is seeking the input before adopting formal school calendars for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years.
The deadline to respond is Feb. 13.

The anonymous survey gives those who participate the opportunity to choose one of three options for each school year, according to an email from Bryan County Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Brooksher.

Participants can also offer their opinions.

“At the end of the survey, individuals are encouraged to submit any ideas, suggestions or concerns about the proposed calendars,” Brooksher said in the email. The results will then be presented to the BoE.

While Georgia requires students have 180 days of instruction per school year, when schools start can vary by district. In Bryan County, a quick look at the options for next school year show start dates ranging from July 31 to Aug. 7, and end dates running from May 21 to May 24.
The July 31 start date would also include a week-long fall break for students. The Aug. 7 beginning would bump the start of the system’s winter break back to Dec. 21.

The school’s 2018-19 calendar includes a school year running from July 30 to May 24; Aug. 9 through May 22; and Aug. 6 through May 21.

The options on the school website list planning days, teacher work days and holidays as well.
