Adams tops at BCMS

POSTED: September 29, 2009 9:13 p.m.

Editor’s note: Today marks the second installment of a series of profiles on the 2009 teachers of the year, by school. We will end with a profile on the systemwide teacher of the year.

Name: Melissa Adams

School; Bryan County Middle School

Subject Taught: Life Science

Personal Background: I have been married to my husband, John, for 11 years. We live here in Black Creek with our three children Avery, BCES, Emery, Pembroke-Pre-K, and Harrison, who’s 2. Avery and Emery are both gymnast, which takes up most of our free time. Other than watching them flip and turn we enjoy watching the BCHS softball and basketball teams play.

Professional Background: I received my undergraduate degree from Armstrong Atlantic State University located in Savannah. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I have received my Gifted In-Field Certificate from the University of Georgia, and I am currently working towards my master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. Upon completion of my master’s degree, I plan to immediately begin my educational specialist degree. While perusing these degrees, I also hope to obtain Master Teacher status as well as becoming National Board Certified.

What made you choose to get into teaching?

The main factors that influenced me to become an educator are my children. I needed a career that would allow me to be the best mom I could be and still have a rewarding career.
