POSTED: February 28, 2009 1:00 a.m.

Richmond Hill High School special education teacher Kema Pena was recently named RHHS Teacher of the Year. Pena has been teaching for 13 years and has been at RHHS for two years now. "She is one of the most committed teachers I’ve ever seen as far as taking care of special needs kids," RHHS Principal Charles Spann said. "She’s here early and stays late. She communicates well with the parents to keep them advised of the progress or lack of progress they might be making. She’s just the kind of person we want here at Richmond Hill High School." Pena said she is humbled by the award and appreciates "the fact that the special ed program is recognized for the work that all of us are doing there. Winning this signifies that all special ed teachers are recognized by their peers in a way that we haven’t always been recognized."
