A Fort Stewart soldier was killed Thursday in a car crash in Tattnall County.

Staff Sgt. Joseph L. Cunningham, 36, of Anniston, Ala., was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 196 near Glennville around 1 a.m., according to a news release from Fort Stewart. He had just arrived from Fort Riley, Kansas, and was to be a member of the 3rd Infantry Division Band.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the two-car crash that also claimed two additional lives.

The Army is providing survivor and chaplain assistance to Cunningham's family.

An Army band member by training, the sergeant had served more than 17 years. He had two deployments to Afghanistan with previous units, most recently returning in January 2007.
