County to end retirement health benefit

Measure won't impact current retirees or employees

Bryan County currently plays about 80 percent of health coverage for its retired employees — and that won’t change for anyone hired before May 1.
They’ll be grandfathered in.
Future county employees hired on or after May 1, 2014 won’t get that same benefit, after Bryan County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to end the coverage, which began in 2002.
The reason is cost, county administrator Ray Pittman told commissioners.
“Everybody we talked to suggested we suspend this for future employees,” he said, noting the county’s costs and obligations are increasing rapidly.
