Auxiliary's flags to stay downtown

POSTED: October 17, 2012 11:25 a.m.

Area residents who enjoy the patriotic stars and stripes display that has long graced the downtown area of Pembroke in celebration of military-related holidays and events can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the flags will remain downtown.
According to Susie Magee, president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 164, the unit’s flag committee has decided to leave the display in its current location after discussions with City Project Manager Ricky McCoy.
“We have decided we will continue to let the flags fly in downtown Pembroke,” Magee said.
The flag display was the subject of a Pembroke City Council meeting Oct. 9 when the unit said it had decided to move the iconic display to the American Legion Post 164 on Highway 280 due to a sidewalk project near the city’s caboose where the flags have always been flown.
Magee said although the flags will remain downtown, she and other unit members have asked that city officials notify them if any changes, like the sidewalks, will be made to the area where the flags are displayed.
“We would just like to be notified when they want to do something that concerns our flags,” Magee said.
McCoy said the city is willing to work with the group and was glad they decided to leave the display.
“The flags were always put there and the Auxiliary has always had them, and we wanted to continue to work with them,” he said.
Magee said Tuesday she and other unit members visited Bryan County High School with Mayor Pro-tem Johnnie Miller to recruit helpers from the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps to assist with putting up the flags. She said the art department had also volunteered to create the flyer for the group’s approaching Veterans Day program.
“There will be no change for the ceremony,” she said. “We will be having our Veterans Day program with the flags around the caboose Nov. 10 at 11 o’clock (a.m.).”
