James G. Blaine once noted, “The United States is the only country with a known birthday.”  And on Wednesday, visitors from as far away as Maryland came to celebrate that day at Fort McAllister for the state historic park’s annual July Fourth program.
With games like tug-of-war, sack races, an egg toss, a wheelbarrow race and other Civil War-period activities, the day was full of fun for the whole family.
To cool of, park rangers served up ice-cold slices of watermelon. And no special celebration — like the nation’s birthday — could be complete without musket and cannon salutes.
