An early morning crash Friday claimed the life of a Bryan County Deputy on I-95 in Chatham County.

According to Joel Mock with the Georgia State Patrol who is investigating the accident, Deputy Robert Crapse, 32, of Ellabell was killed just after 2 a.m. when his K-9 unit vehicle was struck head on at mile marker 96 in Pooler.

Patricia Ann Collins, 23, of Richmond Hill was traveling south in the northbound lane of I-95 when the collision occurred. Collins was flown by Life Star to Memorial University Medical Center where she remains in serious condition, Mock said. Alcohol is suspected, but the accident is still under investigation, he added.

According to Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Public Information Officer Julian Miller, Crapse was headed home from work when the accident occurred. Miller added a second Bryan County deputy was behind Crapse and tried to get him out of the car.

Mock said the dog involved in the accident suffered minor injuries but will be fine.

Southside EMS, Savannah Fire Department, Pooler Police, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and Bryan County all responded to the accident.
