SAVANNAH — The U.S. Coast Guard is completing an oil spill cleanup on the Savannah River.

The Savannah Morning News reports ( the Coast Guard says about 2,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled into the Savannah River and onto the deck of the motor vessel Ever Diadem, a 965-foot-long container ship, when its fuel tank was overfilled on Saturday. The ship was docked at the Garden City terminal and was being refueled.

The Coast Guard said Monday the source of the spill was secured Saturday and about 6,000 feet of boom was placed in the river to minimize the spread of fuel.

Coast Guard Air Station Savannah conducted flights to assess the environmental impact and Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Savannah personnel coordinated the cleanup efforts.
