Redskins win two at Diamond Day

POSTED: March 8, 2011 12:55 p.m.

The Bryan County High baseball team held its annual Diamond Day games in Pembroke on Saturday and picked up two more wins on the season to push their record to 4-2.
Game 1 saw Bryan County beat Groves 9-7 as Skeebo Carter struck out four batters in five innings to pick up the win. Ben Covington got the save after pitching the last two innings.
"It wasn't a pretty win, but we hit well and fielded just good enough to win," Bryan County coach Tony Dragon said.
All seven of Groves runs were unearned. The leading hitters for Bryan County were Garrett Riggleman, who went 2 for 4 with a 2B and RBI and two runs scored, and Carter, who was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI.
In Game 2 against Montgomery County, the Redskins rode the superb pitching of winning pitcher Matthew for a 13-1 win shortened by the mercy rule.
Herb struck out seven in five innings and gave up only one earned run. "We played an excellent overall game," Dragon said. "Matthew pitched a gem of a game and our defense was strong along with our hitting. We continued to run the bases aggressively and the outcome was the most complete game we have played all year."
Zach Shinall was 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored; Carter went 1 for 2 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs and Herb was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Bryan County traveled to Millen on Monday to face Jenkins County in the first Region 3-A clash of the season and will be back in Pembroke Wednesday against Southeast Bulloch. The JV game is at 4 p.m. and the varsity contest gets under way at 6 p.m.
