The recreation programs in South Bryan have grown to such a size that some officials say it’s time to transition administrative duties to the director of the recreation department there.

“A lot of people are a little confused on who does what,” South Bryan Recreation Director Kay Green told county commissioners earlier this month. “They kind of think Kay Green does everything. And I need a bullet proof vest I think sometimes.”

Currently, the all-volunteer Richmond Hill Recreation Association (RHRA) Executive Board orders all the equipment and uniforms for sports, organizes and drafts kids to teams and adults to coach, and is responsible for registration for recreational programs.

Green told commissioners that since she took over the department three years ago, she’s been responsible for scheduling and maintaining facilities, but would like more responsibilities to make the program more efficient.

County Administrator Phil Jones said as recreation programs grow, they sometimes outgrow the volunteers. The county is going to start transitioning the administrative duties from the RHRA to Green.

“The south end is certainly at that point where it’s starting to make the shift,” he said during the Feb. 8 meeting. “That’s where we’re headed. Maybe we need to go faster.”
